Lieutenant General Sir William Home, 8th Earl of Home (1681 – 28 April 1761) was the eighth holder of the title of Earl of Home.
Military career[]
Having inherited the title in 1720 on the death of Alexander Home, 7th Earl of Home, Home was commissioned into the 2nd Regiment of Dragoon Guards in 1735.[1] He fought at the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745.[1]
On 11 August 1750 he became colonel of the 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot[1] and on 29 April 1752 he became colonel of the 29th Regiment of Foot.[1] In 1757 he was made Governor of Gibraltar and in 1759 he was promoted to Lieutenant General.[1]
He died in Gibraltar in 1761.[1]
Family[]
He married Elizabeth Gibbons.[1] On his death he left the title to Alexander Home, 9th Earl of Home (died 1786).[1]
