During World War II the United States used fictional army formations, as part of strategic or tactical military deceptions.
6th Airborne Division[]
The 6th Airborne Division was created for Operation Vendetta in 1944 but was also mentioned in other battles. It was an airborne division made up of multiple regiments and battalions.[1]
55th Infantry Division[]
The 55th Infantry Division was a ficitious infantry division created by the United States and the allies. It was made up of the also fictitious 78th Infantry Regiment, the 83rd Infantry Regiment and the 96th Infantry Regiment. The unit was created in 1943 to help cover-up the departure of the US 5th Infantry Division from Iceland.[2][3]
