The Explorer was built by Pusey & Jones of Wilmington, Delaware in 1904.[1] She was transferred to the United States Navy on 22 May 1918, and returned to USCGS service on 31 March 1919. The ship was transferred to the National Youth Authority in 1939, and was acquired by the US Army and renamed the USAT Atkins (FS 237) in 1942.
