The Type 062 class gunboat is a class of gunboats of the People's Republic of China's People's Liberation Army Navy. Successor to the Shantou class gunboat, it is also known by its NATO reporting name Shanghai-I and Shanghai-II. The class is larger than its predecessor and is the most widely built and exported Chinese military boat in terms of numbers. This unsophisticated class is relatively well-armed for its size, and with patrol mission as main duty, supplemented by ASW missions.
Shanghai class gunboats[]
The first of the Type 062 family was the Shanghai-I class, with a total of 12 built, some of which remained in active service well into the early 1990s. The Shanghai-I class was slightly smaller than its successor the Shanghai-II class, displacing 125 tons instead of 135 tons, and had a twin Chinese Type 66 57 mm gun mount forward. All other specifications are identical to the Shanghai-II class, which replaced the 57 mm with twin 37 mm gun mounts.
Fushun class minesweeper[]
The Fushun class minesweeper was developed from Shanghai-II class gunboat. This minesweeper version had reduced armament, with minesweeping gear replacing some of the weapons. All other characteristics of this class are identical to the Shanghai-II class, and all of 20 units were transferred to the reserves, subordinated to the naval militia for training purposes, and are being mothballed.

- Democratic Republic of the Congo Navy (8 × Shanghai-II, only one of which is operational)
- Egyptian Navy (4 × Shanghai-II)
- Korean People's Navy (Shanghai-I or -II)
- Pakistan Navy (Shanghai-II)
- Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces[3]
- Sri Lanka Navy (Shanghai-II)
- Timor Leste Defence Force (2)[4]
The original of Type 062[]
During the late 1950s,the PLAN found they need a more powerful gunboat because the 80-ton class Shantou class gunboat and Huangpu class gunboat are too small, lack of firepower and endurance. Several prototypes are built by different shipyard. They are Type 0105 from Luda(3),Type 0108 from Qingdao(1),Type 0109 from Shanghai(10),Type 0110 from Guangzhou(3), and displacement varied from 100-150t, speed varied from 28-30kt,with different weapon arrangements, including 57IIx1,37IIx1,14.5IIx2 or 37IIx2,14.5IIx2. In 1960,a hybrid of all the prototypes,Type 0111 was laid down at Dalian shipyard(Luda),th start of the legendary Type 062 class.
Type 0111-A(0111甲) class gunboat[]
The first of the Type 062 class gunboat family was Type 0111-A(0111甲) with a total of 30 built. First 3 ships have a Type-66 57mm twin mount forward, others replaced the 57mm twin mount with 37mm twin mount. In 1964 some of these ships added 1 twin Type-56 75mm recoilless-gun in front of the forward gun mount and 1 Type-53 82mm mortar behind the backward 37mm twin gun mount. Of all the 30 built,17 are North region type and 13 are South region type.

- Complement: 38
- Armament:
- Guns: 4 Type 61 37mm guns (II x 2), 4 Type 61 25mm guns (II x 2). 2 Type 56 75mm recoilless-guns (II x 1) and 1 Type 53 82mm mortar(only some ships have)
- ASW: max 8 depth charges.
- Mines:max 6 mines.
- Radar: 1 navigational or surface search radar
Type 0111-B(0111乙) class gunboat[]
The L-12V-180 diesel engine used by Type 062 are prone to overheat, thirsty for fuel and has a poor working life. So the small L-12D-6 diesel engine was introduced. The new engine is more fuel efficiency and has long life but rated only 910 hp,so the max speed for 0111-B is only 28.5kt. The low speed disappointed PLAN and only 16 ships were built.
- Speed: 28.5 kt
- Propulsion: 2 L-12V-180 diesel engine(licensed soviet M-50F3) 1200 hp each,2 L-12D-6 diesel engine 910 hp each, with 4 shafts
Shanghai-II class gunboat[]
- Specifications for Shanghai-II:

- ASW: 8 depth charges.
- Radar: 1 navigational or surface search radar
Fushun class minesweeper[]
Another derivative of the Type 062 family is the Fushun class minesweeper developed from Shanghai-II class gunboat. This minesweeper version had reduced armament, with minesweeping gear replacing some of weapons. All other characteristic of this class is identical to that of Shanghai-II class, and all of the 20 units were transferred to reserves subordinated to the naval militia for training purposes, and they are being mothballed.
