The Sukhoi Su-33 Sea Flanker (Flanker-D) is the naval version of the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker, made specifically to the Russian Navy's needs to operate on the Admiral Kuznetsov Aircraft Carrier. The main differences between the Su-33 and the Su-27 is that the Su-33 is made for operation on aircraft carriers and has the capability of aerial refueling, capabilities that it's land-based counterpart, the Su-27, does not have.

Description[]

Su-33s on board Admiral Kuznetsov

The Su-33 Sea Flanker is a fighter for exclusive use on the Admiral Kuznetsov Aircraft Carrier, manufactured by Sukhoi. This is the first version for aircraft carriers of the famous Su-27, which is built on the same platform (unit construction) of the Su-27, and tested the subsequent electronics of the Sukhoi Su-30; front wings were installed ("Canards") to improve control at low speeds and is a fighter jet, deployed on horizontal take-off aircraft carriers, which replaced the board aircraft project Yakovlev Yak-38 and the more modern Yakovlev Yak-141 vertical take-off, by the superior flight performance, load capacity and speed offered by the Su-33.
