This is the full structure of the Soviet Central Group of Forces (TSGV) in 1989, just before the end of the Cold War. In 1989, the TSGV was aimed again NATO troops located in Southern Germany, but at the same time was on the look-out for the possibility of confronting possible aggression form the territory of the officially neutral Austria.[1]

The Central Group of Forces (TSGV) was an operational-strategic formation (group of forces) of the Soviet Armed Forces, which existed twice in the period after the end of the Great Patriotic War: - in the period from June 10, 1945 to April 14, 1955, was deployed on the territory of Czechoslovakia (before 1949), Austria and Hungary; - in the period from October 24, 1968 to June 21, 1991, was stationed in Czechoslovakia.[1]

When the Soviet Union fell apart, many of the units of the TSGV joined the new Czechoslovak Army, while at the same time the withdrawal of troops began in August 1990 with only 153 tanks, 254 IFV and APCs, 141 guns, mortars, and MLRS, and 10 helicopters remained in Czechoslovakia. Prior to the group's withdrawal, the group included 73.5 thousand people, 1412 tanks, 2563 IFVs and APCs, 1246 guns, mortars and MLRS, 127 aircraft, and 189 helicopters.[1]
