The following list shows the structure of the Russian Armed Forces as of September/October 2020. This structure is mostly taken from American sources or Third Party sources, as much information isn't available in Russian or outdated/not reliable due to state-run media in Russia.
2022 UPDATE: Due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, changes which are up to 2022 will be updated with new information emerging during the ongoing conflict. Those units which are confirmed to be engaged in the region will be marked with crossed swords: .
Because of many reports (according to both the UN and Ukrainian sources) of War Crimes committed during the Invasion of Ukraine, an insignia will be added where those formations possibly committed these crimes.
As many people know, the Russian Federation has become an authoritarian regime, the reason why this is bring this up is because the current status of the military has become a close held secret in some areas. Because of the above reason, sources are pretty scarce from inside Russia, however some sites are great outside information pieces:
- Soviet Armed Forces 1945–1991 (Organisation and order of battle) – Great site for everything from armies to division to regiments and battalions for all services. Though only going to 1991 in some cases, the site is continually updated to recent times, and much information below is from this site along with the Russian Wikipedia equivalent articles.
- Russian Strategic Missile Forces Directory – Unknown is this is an official site, but very useful for the missile and rocket units, histories, and subordinates.
- Russian Wikipedia on the Russian Armed Forces – though semi-outdated (as the English Wikipedia is also), this is a great reference to bring over the language barrier, especially in the area of commanders and banners, etc.
- Russian Military Guide at GlobalSecurity.org – another freelancer site, but good for the older orders of battle along with some unit histories and expanded information.
- Russian Defence Policy – freelance English site (mostly translates Russian military news)
- The Red Star – Official Russian military news (possibly), great for some up-to-date information and news

Northern Military District[]
In 2014, the Russian Ministry of Defence authorised the formation of a new district known as the 'Arctic District', tasked with protecting Russian interests in the Arctic region. In 2018, the last motor rifle brigade was formed in the region, bringing the district to its optimal organisation of two rifle brigades, and two other brigades (under naval command). From January 2021, the command will expand to form the new Northern District, based on the current Joint Strategic Command.[3][4][5][6][7]
On 1 January 2021 the command will expand to carry out its activities "...as an interspecific strategic territorial association (...) performing the tasks of the military district." On formation, the command will separate from the Northern Fleet, and be separated into two commands (Northern Command & Northern Fleet).[8]

In 2022, elements of the 200th Brigade participated in the Invasion of Ukraine.[49] Interrogations of Russian prisoners of war established that the brigade was in Ukraine and was almost annihilated in the Battle of Kharkiv.[50][51][52][53] A reserve battalion of the brigade was reportedly being activated for operations in Ukraine as of July 2022.[54]

Western Military District[]
As part of the 2008–2020 Russian Armed Forces reform, the Western Military District (Западный военный округ) was formed on 21 October 2010 through the merging of the Leningrad Military District, Moscow Military District, (later also) the Baltic Fleet, and the 1st Air Force and Air Defence Command. In 2020, the district now oversees all military operations in three federal districts; North-Western, Central, and part of the Volga Region. These districts include the areas of; the Republic of Karelia , Belgorod , Bryansk , Vladimir , Vologda , Voronezh , Ivanovskaya , Kaliningrad , Kaluga , Kostroma , Kursk , Leningrad , Lipetsk ,Moscow , Nizhny Novgorod , Novgorod , Oryol , Pskov , Ryazan , Smolensk , Tambov , Tver , Tula , Yaroslavl regions , Moscow , and Saint Petersburg.[79]
The Western Military District now oversees all units, of all arms and services (with the exception of the Strategic Missile Forces and Long-Range Aviation). In 2014, the Northern Fleet and all units based within the Russian Arctic were withdrawn to form the new Joint Strategic Command (Northern Fleet).[79][80]
On 21 December 2022, the Western Military District was split in three with the reformation of the Leningrad and Moscow Military Districts. This came after announcements which will see the Russian Ground Forces expanded by almost half a million by 2025 and its structure reversed to the old 'District-Army-Division' system instead of the current 'District-Army-Brigade' system. Among the changes will include the expansion of the seven motor rifle brigades into divisions in the Western, Central, Eastern, and North Districts, and reformation of two air assault divisions.[81]

Special Forces Units[]
370th Separate Spetsnaz Detachment conducting special reconnaissance training (2017).
The Special Forces Directorate of Spetsnaz troops in the Western Military District includes two brigades, in addition to a separate Spetsnaz brigade part of the airborne forces. Each 'detachment' is the rough equivalent to a battalion. Unlike in some Western countries, the Spetsnaz is the name given to all special forces, with its troops under administration of their respective branch in peacetime. If mobilised (for example for Ukraine in 2022), the troops come under the direct command of the directorate.

The Operational Group of Russian Troops in Transnistria also known as 'OGRV PRRM' was established in April 1995 as part of a Russian effort to retain a military base in southern Europe. Following the un-recognised separation of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (or Transnistria), the group has provided a Russian presence in the region. The group was at first a Lieutenant General's command, later raised to Major Generals' command, and now a Colonel's (Brigade) command.

The 1st Guards Tank Army was stood up in late 2014 and announced in 2015. In 2013, the 4th Guards Tank Brigade and the 5th Motor Rifle Brigade were converted back to divisions, becoming the 4th Tank and 2nd Motor Rifle Divisions respectively. The Army was formed in order to increase the potential of available forces deployed in the outskirts of Moscow. The main goal was to create a fighting force composed of light to heavy units, which could undertake combat operations across the entire spectrum, from low-level counterinsurgency to high-tempo maneuver operations against a near-peer adversary.[93]
In January 2022, the 1st Guards Tank Army was deployed to Western Russia, taking position just over the border from the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.[94]

If mobilised (for example for Ukraine in 2022), the troops come under the direct command of the directorate.

Air Force Command[]
As a result of the 2008–2020 Russian armed forces reform, the Air Force or Вое́нно-возду́шные си́лы, also known as the BBC was drastically overhauled. The old "Soviet style" air armies gave way to the new modern integrated Air Force and Air Defence Commands. These new commands saw the merger of the old 1st Leningrad, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Air Armies with their equivelent 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Air Defence Armies. As a result of these changes, all training centres (with the exception of regional training centres) and specialist units were placed under command of the new Air Force High Command, Командование военно-воздушных сил, based in Moscow.[305][306]
As of 2020, the Air Force has been rapidly expanding since roughly 2016, with many of the old air bases expanding to form new aviation regiments, notably in the Arctic and Central Districts. Now, the Air Force is divided into the 4th BBC based in Novocherkassk (covering the Southern MD), 6th Leningrad BBC based in Khvoiny, St Petersburg (covering the Northern and North Eastern areas of the Western MD, based around St Petersburg), 11th BBC based in Chita (covering the Eastern MD), 14th BBC in Shagol, Chelyabinsk (covering the Central MD), Military Transport Aviation Command based in Moscow, Long-Range Aviation Command based in Engels, and the Air Force Central Units (those directly subordinated to the Air Force Command in Moscow).[305][306]
