Stasi

The Stasi was the colloquial name for the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (translation: "Ministry for State Security") was the main organization, secret police and intelligence of German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Created in 8 February 1950, it centered their operations in the capital, East Berlin in which it had a large complex in Lichtenberg and smaller ones scattered around the city. The Stasi is recognized as one of the most effective intelligence services in the world.

Was dissolved in 1989 after fall of the Berlin Wall.

The former Stasi headquarters in Berlin is now the Stasimusem, a museum where visitors can learn about the activities. Resistance to the socialist regime was chased by this secret police organisation.
