Its constituents included Aidid's breakaway United Somali Congress faction, the Somali Patriotic Movement, and other southern groups. They were one faction in the Somali Civil War. Between 2,000-4,000 militants from the Somali National Alliance participated in the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993.
