Airplanes stationed at the base patrolled the southeast Alaskan waters, tracking reported submarines and watching for other enemy activity.[2]
Located on Baranof Island, Sitka (or Japonski Island), it was declared a National Historic Landmark on August 11, 1986.[1][2]
