Field Marshal Sir Robert Rich, 4th Baronet (3 July 1685 – 1 February 1768) was a British cavalry officer.
Career[]
Rich was commissioned into the 1st Foot Guards in 1700.[1] He fought at the Battle of Schellenberg and the Battle of Blenheim in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession.[1]
He was successively colonel of the 13th Hussars,[1] the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars[1] and the 6th Dragoon Guards.[1]
He fought at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743 during the War of the Austrian Succession[2] In 1757 he was made a field marshal.[1]
He was also Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea from 1740 until 1768.[2]
Family[]
By his wife Elizabeth Griffith (b. c. 1692–13 October 1773), whom he married in 1710,[1] he had two sons, Sir Robert Rich, 5th Baronet, and Sir George Rich, 6th Baronet, and two daughters, Elizabeth (d. 17 September 1795), who married George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton, and Mary, who died unmarried.
