Shimr ibn Dhi 'l-Jawshan ibn Rabi'ah al-Kalbi (also called al-Kilabi Arabic: شمر بن ذي الجوشن بن ربيعة الكلبي) was with the commander of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad's army during the Battle of Karbala. Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad sent him with Umar ibn Sa'ad . He was brother of Fatima al-Kilabi Umm ul-Banin, the second wife of Ali (first Shia Imam and the fourth Righteous Caliph), and hailed from the tribe of Banu Kalb. He was maternal uncle of Abbas ibn Ali and Uthman ibn Ali, the martyrs of Karbala.
In battle, he was responsible for beheading Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the prophet Muhammad. He was also instrumental in pillaging the camp of Imam al-Husayn after raising his head on a post to declare his victory.
He also participated in the Battle of Siffin.
Shimr was eventually killed by Mukhtar al-Thaqafi's troops who wished to take revenge upon the killers of Imam al-Husayn and the rest of the members of the Prophet's family. He was arrested and brought before Mukhtar, who cut off his head, butchered his body and had his dead body torn to pieces by hungry dogs.
