Kazan is a Russian nuclear attack submarine of the Yasen class. It is the second boat of the project; as from the first it is separated by 16 years (1993-2009) considerable changes are made to its design.[1]

Building history[]

The submarine project has been developed in the "Malachite" design office in Saint Petersburg. The Russian navy has declared that the submarine will be improved in comparison with Severodvinsk, the first of the Yasen-class submarines.[1][2] According to Moscow Defense Brief editor Mikhail Barabanov, the Yasen class will not enter serial production, so Kazan appears to be a more affordable replacement.[3] Differences in the project have appeared sufficient to consider it as a new updated version (Yasen-M Russian: Ясень-М).[4]

The second submarine will have improved electronics and fire-control systems, and will be built exclusively with Russian-made materials and components
Russian: Улучшения связаны с заменой элементной базы комплексов радиоэлектронного вооружения, а также с переходом на оборудование и материалы полностью российского производства, исключая поставщиков из бывших республик СССР

Anastasia Nikitinskaya (Sevmash spokeswoman)[1][2]

Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky stated that work on a second Yasen-class submarine had been started on 24 July 2009.[2][4]
