The Raad-1 (Thunder 1) is an Iranian self-proppeled howitzer, it's chassis is based on the also Iranian Boragh while it's tower is based on the soviet 2S1 Gvosdika.
Description[]
The Raad 1 (Thunder-1) self-propelled howitzer was locally made in Iran and successfully tested in 1996. It is speculated that the Raad 1 was accepted to service and is in mass production.
The Raad 1 is fitted with a turret from the Soviet 2S1 Gvosdika self-propelled howitzer. Some howitzers were locally modified. Vehicle is fitted with a load assisting system and has maximum rate of fire of 4 - 5 rounds per minute. The Raad 1 fires all standard Soviet 122-mm projectiles, including HE-FRAG, HEAT, cluster, smoke and illumination. Maximum range of fire is 15.2 km with HE-FRAG projectile. A total of 40 projectiles are carried. The Raad 1 has got no secondary armament and has a crew of four soldiers, that serve as commander, gunner, loader and driver. This self-propelled howitzer provides armor protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. The Raad 1 is based on the Iranian-made Boragh armored personnel carrier. The Boragh is a conversion of the either Soviet BMP-1 or Chinese Type 86 IFVs. Vehicle is fitted with a diesel engine. The Raad 1 is fully amphibious with the minimum of preparation. On water this vehicle is propelled by its tracks.
