Operation Arctic Sunrise was an operation that occurred on December 16, 2006. It was a squadron- sized mission designed to help the Iraqis secure their neighborhood and distribute supplies.
Operation details[]
Planning for the operation started two weeks prior to the actual operation but the operation itself focused on helping Iraqis secure their neighborhoods by gaining intelligence and disrupting anti-coalition activities south of Baghdad. The operation lasted for six days.
During the operation, American and Iraqi forces patrolled neighborhoods and distributed humanitarian packages containing food, water and medicine. With days of indirect fire from mortars, improvised explosive devices as well as small arms fire from enemy snipers, the combine coalition forces pushed through the adversity and accomplished the mission.
“We believe that the mission was a success,” said Goodwin. “There are less bad guys on the streets as well as less equipment to conduct anti-coalition activities, and most importantly, we brought every paratrooper home.”
