On 5 December 1989, France launched Operation Oside by sending paratroopers into Moroni at the request of the acting president, Said Mohamed Djohar[1] to ensure the maintenance of order after the assassination of his president, Ahmed Abdallah.
The French Navy, including the staff managing this operation, was at anchor off the coast of Comoros. Admiral Bonnot, commander of the Maritime Forces of the Indian Ocean zone (ALINDIEN) supervised the use of the elements of the Navy.
