No. 4624 (County of Oxford) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force is a squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. The squadron supports the Air Life and Transport Force based at RAF Brize Norton by providing transport and supply specialists.[1] Since 2022, it has been part of the RAF Support Force.

History[]

No. 4624 Squadron traces its lineage back to 1982, when the squadron was formed to provide transport and support logistics at RAF Brize Norton.[1] In 1991, the squadron deployed to Iraq on Operation Granby during the Gulf War.[1] From 2002 to 2014, the squadron saw some deployments on Operation Herrick supporting the RAF transport squadrons based there.[1] In 2003, the squadron deployed during the opening fazes of Operation Telic.[1] In 2012, the squadron celebrated their 30th Anniversary parade and was granted with the Freedom of Oxfordshire and paraded through Oxford as a result. The squadron returned for the same honour in 2014.[1][2]

Today, the squadron is based at RAF Brize Norton, in Oxfordshire, and specializes in Preparation and Loading of Cargo, RAF Air Transport Support, and Charter Aircraft Support. The squadron works not only at RAF Brize Norton but to other bases also needing support as they are one of the major movements squadrons of the RAF Regiment. Most of the reservists work alongside their regular colleagues in the RAF Regiment and routinely help move passengers and freight through the RAF.[1]

Following the reorganisation of the Royal Air Force from 2022-2024, the squadron joined the RAF Support Force as its only direct-reporting squadron.[3][4]
