NOAAS Reuben Lasker is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) fishery research vessel. The ship's namesake, Reuben Lasker, was a fisheries biologist who served with the Southwest Fisheries Center, National Marine Fisheries Service, and taught at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.[1][2]
Construction and commissioning[]
Marinette Marine Corporation was awarded a $73.6 million contract to build a new fishery research vessel for the NOAA in April 2010.[3] A keel laying ceremony was held at the Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin, on June 21, 2011, and the ship was sponsored by Pamela Lasker, daughter of the ship's namesake. Reuben Lasker is being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.[2]
By February 2012, Reuben Lasker was 60% complete.[3] Four months later, on June 16, 2012, Pamela A. Lasker, Reuben Lasker's daughter, christened the ship as it was side-launched into the Menominee River. The ship was launched with a NOAA R 228 designation, and is scheduled to be home-ported in San Diego in NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center sometime in 2013.[4] The vessel was officially commissioned on May 2, 2014 during a ceremony at the Navy Pier in downtown San Diego.[5]
