The Military Encyclopaedia of Sytin is the common unofficial name of the multi-volume 'Military Encyclopaedia' published by D.Sytin in 1911-1915 and as a result remained unfinished.
History of the publication It was published by the book publishing association Ivan Dmitrievich Sytin from 1911 to 1915 under the editorship of Colonel General Staff of the General Staff Vasily Fedorovich Novitsky. Because of World War I and the subsequent October Revolution the publication remained incomplete; total of 18 volumes, the last word of the 18th volume - Port Arthur. Each volume was accompanied by a large number of charts, geographic and topographic maps, plans, portraits and drawings, included both in the main text, and located on the labels.
The editorial staff[]
Many leading military specialists of Russia took part in the work on the encyclopedia, among them the major-general Aleksandr Nikolaevich Apukhtin, lieutenant-general Mikhail Mikhailovich Borodkin, major general Joseph Iosifovich Zashchuk, captain of the second rank Peter Ivanovich Belavenets, Colonel Nikolai Mitrofanovich Zatvornitsky, Colonel Pyotr Nikolaevich Krasnov, lieutenant-general Aleksandr Petrovich Mikhnevich, Colonel Andrei Evgenievich Snesarev, the captain Vladimir Ksaverevich Sudravsky and many others.
The composition encyclopedia is made according to the alphabet of the articles, however, the authors identified four main divisions on the contents of the encyclopedia, and accordingly the editorial office of these divisions was headed:
- The first department - special military knowledge - Colonel Vasily Fedorovich Novitsky, assistant editor - Colonel Alexander Vladimirovich Gerua. This department dealt with the coverage of the following areas: strategy, tactic, military history, military statistics, military geography, military topography, education and training of troops, information on the armed forces of foreign states.
- The second department - military-technical knowledge and special kinds of troops - lieutenant-colonel Alexey Vladimirovich von Schwartz, his assistants - Colonel Roman Ivanovich Bashinsky and Nikolai Elpifidorovich Dukhanin. The staff of this department prepared articles on artillery, shooting, ballistics, explosives, material artillery, hand weapons, military engineering business, fortification, serfdom, mines, electrical engineering, aeronautics, railway and automotive business, military engineering organization of the Russian army and foreign states, engineering units.
- Third department - general military knowledge - Colonel Vladimir Aleksandrovich Apushkin, assistant editor - Colonel Nikolai Petrovich Vishnyakov. The department was responsible for the preparation of articles on military administration, military law and legislation, military and logistics services, military sanitary affairs, sports and military literature; They also wrote and wrote articles on outstanding military figures and scientists, writers, artists, who devoted their works to the study of issues related to the military matter, and depicting in literature and the art of war, the military life of the army and navy and their heroes.
- The fourth department - naval knowledge - captain of the 2nd rank Gustav Konstantinovich von Schultz, his assistants - Colonel Nikolai Lavrentievich Klado and lieutenant colonel Nikolai Nikolaevich Kuteynikov. Here work was concentrated on articles devoted to all areas of naval affairs.
