Max Edward Bender (10 September 1922 in New Castle, Indiana - 7 July 1995 in Anderson, South Carolina) was an American mechanical engineer and former personal manager of the Jesse French Piano Company in New Castle, Indiana.
Early life[]
Max was born in New Castle, Indiana on September 10, 1922 to Ralph and Doris Bender. He also had two brothers (Ralph Jr. and Robert).
Military Service[]
Max enlisted in the Army Air Forces from New Castle on January 17, 1941 (ASN: 20533386) and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant (ASN: 0-687283). He served with the 91st Bombardment Group, Eighth Air Force during the war. He was shot down by the Germans on July 20, 1944, captured, and spent the rest of the war in POW Camp Stalag Luft 3/7A until being liberated by the allies in April of 1945. He left the military as a First Lieutenant. His military decorations included the Purple Heart and the Air Medal.
Later life[]
He became the Personal manager of the Jesse French Piano Company. He later became a mechanical engineer while working with the Container Corporation of America. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Personal life[]
He married Janet R. Bovender in Henry, Indiana.
Death[]
He died on July 7, 1995 in Anderson, South Carolina at the age of 72 from congestive heart failure.
