Romanticized historical painting of Kenau leading a group of 300 women in defense of Haarlem, by Barent Wijnveld and J.H. Egenberger, 1854
Maria van Schooten (1555-1573) was a Dutch heroine from the Eighty Year's War. She died from the injuries she received after having participated in the defense during the Siege of Haarlem and was given a public funeral with presence of the military and full honors in recognition. She was included in the dictionary Vaderlandsch woordenboek (1785-1799). She is believed to have been one of the women lead by famous Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer.
