The following is a list of countries which host military bases belonging to other countries:

A large system of foreign military bases was established by the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War. Since the end of the Cold War Russia has reduced their network of foreign military bases, while the U.S. has taken steps to expand the geography of its military presence in the world by global repositioning.[1]

French overseas military bases[]

  • Abu Dhabi
  • Djibouti (2,800 people).
  • Gabon (800 people).
  • Senegal (1110 people).
  • Côte d'Ivoire (1000)
  • Chad (1000 people).

According to the White Paper on Defence of France in 2008 year planned to remain in Africa, the eastern coast of the military base in Djibouti, on the islands of Mayotte and Reunion, and on the west coast of one military base in the capital of Gabon, Libreville.[2]

United Kingdom overseas military bases[]

  • Falkland Islands (British Overseas Territory) - 1,650 people.
  • Gibraltar (British Overseas Territory) - 1,000 people.
  • Cyprus (Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia) - two mechanized infantry battalions, a helicopter squadron and other units (3200 people).
  • Brunei - mechanized infantry battalion and a helicopter link (900.)
  • Belize - reinforced mechanized infantry battalion of 1,300 people.
  • Diego Garcia - now transferred to the United States under a naval and air base, but there is division of British Armed Forces of 40 people.
  • Kenya - two bases: The British Peace Support Team (BPST (EA)) and British Army Training Unit Kenya – (BATUK). (BPST (EA)) is located off Ngong Rd in the Karen Suburb of Nairobi. BATUK is located in Nanyuki, 200 km north of Nairobi. It has 56 permanent staff and a rotating staff of 110 personnel.

United States overseas military bases[]

Currently, the U.S. has the world's largest network of foreign military bases (about 700 bases).[3]

  • Japan - more than 50,000 personnel (not including dependents), the United States 7th Fleet and the 3rd MEU are based in Japan, as well
  • Germany - more than 100 thousand people, including infantry and tank units totaling more than 70 thousand people, 15 military bases, 4 bases and one Army aviation support center - nearly a quarter of all foreign bases controlled by Pentagon
  • United Kingdom - about 11 thousand professionals in four Air Force air bases, and a naval base: the headquarters of the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic and a center of communication and tracking submarines
  • Italy - The home base of U.S. naval ships in the Mediterranean, there are four military bases, three Navy (Naples, La Maddalena, Gaeta) and one Air Force base (Vicenza) - totaling approximately 23,000 people.
  • Turkey - Air Force bases in Adana and Izmir
