Major-General Li Shuangjiang (simplified Chinese: 李双江; traditional Chinese: 李雙江; pinyin: Lǐ Shuāngjiāng (born 10 March 1939) is a Chinese military singer.[3]

Biography[]

Li Shuangjiang was born in Harbin, Heilongjiang, Manchukuo in 1939.[3] Li attended the Central Conservatory of Music when he was twenty years old. After graduating from university he was assigned to work in the army song and dance ensemble. At the age of thirty, he joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army Naval Song and Dance Troupe. He made a record that sold three million copies by the age of thirty-two. Now, he is a professor at Central Conservatory of Music.

Personal life and family[]

Ding Ying (丁英) was Li's first wife. She was a dancer. They have a son named Li He (李贺).[4]

In 1990, at age fifty-one, Li married Meng Ge in Beijing. Meng Ge was his student at Central Conservatory of Music. They have a son named Li Tianyi (李天一).[5][6] Meng Ge is also a well-known military singer.[7] Li Tianyi as a youth has become known for his public misbehavior. In 2011 he attacked a couple over a traffic dispute and threatened witnesses and was allegedly illegally driving a BMW at the time. He was sentenced to a year in labor camp. As a result, Shuangjiang was ridiculed in the media for failing to control his son's behavior, and was forced to issue a public apology. In July 2013, Tianyi, then aged 17,[7] was arrested on charges of taking part in a gang-rape of a woman in a Beijing hotel together with four others. He faced a possible 3–10 years in prison.[8] The trial of the five defendants began in late August, 2013.[7] On September 26, 2013, Tianyi was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
