Kunjargad Fort/ Kombad Fort (Marathi language: कुंजारगड/कोम्बडगड)is a fort located 135 km (84 mi)from Kalyan via Khireshwar. The fort is in Akole taluka in Ahmednagar district, of Maharashtra. The name of the fort is derived from the word “Kunj” meaning elephant in Sanskrit due to its similarity with an elephant.[1]
History[]
Not much history of the fort is known. Shivaji Maharaj halted on this fort in 1670.[2]
How to reach[]
The fort and the fortress is accessible in all seasons except rainy season. There are two trek routes starting from village Fopsandi and village Vihir. It takes about two hours to visit the entire fort either from both the villages.
Places to see[]
There is a ruined entrance gates to the fort. There are rock cut water cisterns and remains of dialapedeted buildings on the fort. There are rock cut idols of Hanuman god and Kaloba god on the fort. There are three natural caves on the hillock adjacent to the fort.
