The Kokkilai offensive[2] was a military operation carried out by the Tamil Tigers in Kokkilai, Mullaitivu District, Sri Lanka. It is claimed this was the first attack by LTTE on a Sri Lankan Army barrack. Ravi Jayewardene, brother of then President of Sri Lanka JR Jayewardene reported to the National Security Council that the Kokkilai attack was a full-scale armed confrontation and said the Tamil Tigers were becoming a ‘sophisticated enemy.’
It is believed Tamil Tigers’ Ranjan Kanagaratnam[3] died in this attack, he was the son of Sri Lankan Member of Parliament late K. Kanagaratnam.
