Joseph Foster Green (November 24, 1811 – December 9, 1897) was an officer in the United States Navy and the fourth Commandant of midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy.

Biography

Green was born November 24, 1811 in Topsham, Maine.[1]

From 1855 to 1858 Commander Green served as the fourth Commandant of midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy.[2] On 1 August 1862, Commander Green was in charge of the USS Canandaigua when it launched from the Boston Navy Yard.[3]

He retired from the navy in November 23, 1872 although he maintained his command at the time due to a special authorization of Congress. He died December 9, 1897 in Brookline, Massachusetts.[1]
