The Hayasui (速吸?) was a Japanese fleet oiler (hybrid tanker/carrier) of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN), serving during the World War II.

Construction

At first the Hayasui was one of the Kazahaya class fleet oilers. After the IJN was defeated at the Battle of Midway it was decided to add aviation facilities to Hayasui for accompanying the carrier task force, because one of the causes for the defeat in the Battle of Midway was the lack of reconnaissance planes. Also, the IJN learned that carrier task force needed an action of a long term in Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. The IJN also added the function of food supply ship to her.

Service

  • 24 April 1944 : Completed.
  • May 1944 : Sailed to Tawi-Tawi for Operation A.
  • 19 to 20 June 1944 : Participation to the Battle of the Philippine Sea and damaged.
  • 10 August 1944 : Repairs were completed, and entry to the Hi-71 Convoy (from Moji to Singapore).
