General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan (Bengali:ইকবাল করিম ভূঁইয়া) is the current Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army. He took office at 25 June 2012. Government announced him as country's 13th Chief of Army Staff, however General Bhuiyan will be the 16th Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army, counting ever since promoted Major General from Lt. Colonel Mohammad Abdur Rab was appointed to that position for the first time in 1971.

Early life[]

General Bhuiyan was born in Comilla on 2 July 1957 and studied in Comilla Zilla School and Faujdarhat Cadet College.[2] He entered into Bangladesh Military Academy in 19 March 1976 at 3rd BMA short course and was commissioned on 30 November 1976 in the East Bengal Regiment in East Bengal Regiment, together with General Md Abdul Mubeen, former CAS.
Bhuiyan has participated courses abroad which includes:

  • Company Commander's Course in Malaysia,
  • Course on Peace-Keeping for Decision Makers in the Defence Institute of International Legal Studies in Rhode Islands USA.
  • Graduate of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur
  • Graduate from Command and General Staff College, USA.
  • Member of workshop on Initiative for Conflict Management in JFK School of Government,
  • Member of Harvard University and Logistic Support Issues in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

He held important positions in the Bangladesh Army including

  • Platoon Commander in Bangladesh Military Academy,
  • Colonel Staff of 11 Infantry Division, Bogra,
  • Commander of 105 Infantry Brigade
  • Director of Staff of Defence Services Command and Staff College
  • Commandant of Defence Services Command and Staff College
  • Commandant of the School of Infantry and Tactics (S I & T), Sylhet.
  • GOC of 19 Infantry Division, Ghatail
  • Commander of BANSEC-2, United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Liberia (UNAMSIL).
  • GOC of the 24th Infantry Division, the largest and the only operational division of Bangladesh army.
  • GOC of the 9th Infantry Division, Savar
  • CGS (Chief of General staff) of Bangladesh Army
  • QMG (Quarter Master General)of Bangladesh Army

Popularly known as IKB, General Bhuiyan is regarded in Bangladesh Army as someone who values his principles and is known for his apparent lack of interest in politics. He was appointed as GOC of country's most important 9 Division after country's famous 1/11.

He was promoted to the rank of Major General on 4 February 2003 and as a Lieutenant General in May, 2010. General Bhuiyan was automatically promoted to General from the day he took office of CAS on 25 June 2012. Before being appointed as CAS, Bhuiyan was the Quartermaster General (QMG) of the Army. General Bhuiyan actively took part in Operation Desert Storm and has obtained Kuwait Liberation Medal from Government of Kuwait for bravery.
