The Inter Range Instrumentation Group (IRIG) is the standards body of the Range Commanders Council (RCC). They publish a number of standards through the RCC Secretariat at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR).
The best known IRIG standard is the IRIG Timecode standard used to timestamp video, film, telemetry, radar, and other data collected at test ranges.
Time and Frequency stations using IRIG audio signalling are
- BPM (time service) (China)
- CHU (radio station) (Canada) and
- WWV (radio station), WWVH (US).
IRIG 106 is a comprehensive telemetry standard to ensure interoperability in aeronautical telemetry application at RCC member ranges. IRIG 106 Chapter 10 is the standard for digital flight data recorders. IRIG Standard 313-01 addresses test standards for flight termination receivers/decoders.[1]
As many older modes of IRIG signaling predate modern time and date formats, all devices using IRIG for time synchronization in these older formats must have internal software that is Y2038 date problem compliant.
