Hugh Carey was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at the Battle of Gettysburg on the 2nd July, 1863 in the American Civil War. He acted with daring by capturing the flag of the 7th Virginia Infantry, Confederate States Army, and was twice wounded in the act.

Carey was born in Ireland. His date of enlistment is unknown. At the time of the war between the states he was a sergeant in E Company, 82nd New York Infantry.[1]
