Howe Barracks is a military installation in Canterbury in Kent.

History[]

The barracks was established during the 1930s and became the home of the Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment).[1] They were named after Lieutenant Colonel Gerard Howe, a former commanding officer of the Buffs,[2] and went on to become the regional centre for infantry training as the Home Counties Brigade Depot in 1960.[3] They were also the depot and Regimental Headquarters for the Queen's Regiment,[4] then for the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment[5] and, more recently, for the 5th Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Scotland (the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders).[6] The barracks will close by 2017.[7]
