Awards Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross

Hartmut Schairer (16 September 1916 – 19 July 1942) was a highly decorated Hauptmann in the Luftwaffe during World War II, and a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Hartmut Schairer was killed on 19 July 1942 by Soviet forces over Staraya Russa, Russia, his gunner and fellow Knight's Cross recipient Oberfeldwebel Heinz Bevernis was also killed. During his career he was credited with flying 562 missions.
