Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM-70) "The Spartans" is a United States Navy helicopter squadron based at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida. HSM-70 provides helicopter resources for Carrier Strike Group 2 as part of Carrier Air Wing 8. Since its formation, the squadron remains one of the newest helicopter squadrons in the United States Navy.

History[]

Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 70 was established on 1 March 2008, and on 9 February 2009 was established during a commissioning ceremony at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida. Between May and December 2011 the squadron saw its first operational deployment with Carrier Air Wing 8 as part of Carrier Strike Group 2. The squadron would deploy with the wing and group two more times: February–November 2014, and most recently January–August 2017.[1][2] The squadron is currently, as at 7 March 2022, still based at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida.[3]

In 2014, the squadron was awarded their Battle "E" and later their "NUC", in 2017 the HSMWINGLANT Safety Award, and recently the CNO Safety Award in 2017.[1]

The squadron's nickname is "The Spartans" and refer to their members as "Spartans" rather than sailors informally.[4]

The squadron's current commanding officer as of 7 March 2022 is Commander Anthony J. Polo.[5]

Role[]

Administratively, HSM-70 reports to Commander, Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Atlantic (COMHELMARSTRIKEWINGLANT) based at Naval Station Mayport also in Florida.[6] Operationally however, the squadron forms part of Carrier Air Wing 8, which is part of Carrier Strike Group 2 when deployed.[2][4]

In the squadron's role as a 'Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron', the unit is equipped with the Sikorsky MH-60 Seahawk utility helicopter.
