The first Vessel to bear the name HMS Vivid was a wooden paddle steamer, launched in 1848 for the Royal Mail, serving on the Mail packet service between Dover and Calais. After being requisitioned by the Royal Navy for use as a tender at Woolwich and Sheerness Dockyards she became the tender to HMS Royal Adelaide the Devonport flagship in 1872. In 1889 Vivid became the Devonport Flagship, and the newly established Devonport Royal Navy Barracks was also named Vivid.
