HMS Dunvegan Castle was an armed merchant cruiser. She was originally a mail and passenger ship of the Union-Castle Line's London-to-South Africa service,[1] named Dunvegan Castle, launched 26 March 1936 and completed 27 August 1936. She was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1940 and renamed HMS Dunvegan Castle. She was torpedoed and damaged in the Western Atlantic, off the coast of Ireland (55°05′N 11°00′W / 55.083°N 11°W / 55.083; -11) by U-46, on 27 August 1940, with the loss of 27 of 289 crew. Survivors were rescued by HMS Harvester and HMS Primrose. She foundered the next day.[2]
