Lieutenant George Gravatt (1815–1843)[1] was an officer in the British Army. In May 1839, he succeeded Sir Sidney Cotton[2] as commander of the Moreton Bay settlement in what is now Brisbane, Australia.[3] He held the position for three months.
Gravatt was born in Woolwich in London in 1815.[4]
A local hill was named Mount Gravatt, and later this name was transferred to the local suburb.
Gravatt was transferred with his regiment, the 28th Foot Regiment, to Karachi India,[5] where he died in 1843.[4]
