The GAZ-2975 "Tigr" (Tiger, Russian: ГАЗ-2975 «Тигр») is a Russian high-mobility multipurpose military vehicle, manufactured by Military Industrial Company LLC (GAZ Group division). It is the military version of the GAZ-2330 "Tigr". It is equipped with a powerful diesel, turbocharged, air-cooled engine and five-speed manual transmission. Independent torsion suspension, telescopic shock absorbers and regulated-pressure tires ensure exceptional cross-country ability, top speed of 90 km/h over rough terrain and up to 150 km/h on the road. The Tiger can ford water up to 1.3 meters deep. Its chassis can support various specialized bodies emphasizing armor, passenger capacity, cargo, etc.

It was first shown as the IDEX exhibition in 2001.[2] Pilot production started in 2004 with 96 vehicles initially made in 2005 before the Russian Army officially adopted the GAZ-2975 into service.[1] The vehicle was then officially manufactured in 2007.[1]

During the Interpolitex-2010 exhibition, MIC presented the upgraded version of GAZ Tigr - the VPK-233114 Tigr-M with a new YaMZ-534 diesel engine, additional armour and NBC protection system.

In February 2013 it was announced that the new GAZ Tigr-M will enter in service with the Russian army during the first half of the 2013. Mass production and the export version have already been launched.[3]

  • GAZ-233001 - unarmored variant with a maximum unrefueled range of 90 kilometers and intended as a luxury SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) for the civilian market, it was launched in October 2009;
  • GAZ-233011
  • GAZ-233034 SPM-1 - Special police car, designed for use as a police vehicle in counter-terrorism operations. Has a third class ballistic protection in accordance with GOST R 50963-96 board and feed projections. In the frontal projection of the machine is protected by class 5 GOST.
  • GAZ-233036 SPM-2 Tiger or Tiger MTA-2 is an multipurpose armored police vehicle; the SPM-2E Tiger police car features onboard information management system and was introduced at the Eurosatory 2008 exhibition; and command-staff vehicle P-145BMA for the security forces. The SPM designation stands for Special Police Machine/Car. The SPM-2 Tiger offers a ballistic protection equivalent to NATO STANAG 4569 level 2.
  • GAZ-233114 Tigr-M - Improved protection against land mines and NBC threats.[4]
  • GAZ-29651 "Karatel" (Punisher) - lightweight, inexpensive version of GAZ-2975.

Users[]

  • Flag of Armenia Armenia: Used by police forces and armed forces.[5]
  • Flag of the People's Republic of China China: Co-production license with Beijing Yanjing Automobile since Russia refused to grant China a license to fully produce the Tigr.[6] Most Tigrs delivered to Chinese Public Security police in 2008-10 with 110 vehicles in service.[7] Most have been seen publicly in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and in the 2009 Xinjiang riots.[7][8] 5 Tigrs (Fully assembled) were delivered with five more in kit form for assembly while 100 were assembled in China.[7][9]
  • Flag of the Republic of the Congo Congo: Tigrs are in use by the Congolese police force.[10]
  • Flag of Guinea Guinea: 3 Tigrs were known to be purchased for the Guinean Presidential Guard in 2011.[7]
  • Flag of Mongolia Mongolia: Used by special police units.[11]
  • Flag of Nicaragua Nicaragua: Agreement signed in 2012 on supplying the "Tiger" armored vehicles to that country.[12]
  • Flag of Russia Russia: 200. Further purchases were discontinued.[13] However, 500 vehicles were placed into service by 2011 with 34 Tigr-Ms manufactured with 10 Tigr-M Mktk Rei PPs scheduled for delivery by 2012.[7] A Tigr-M prototype was commissioned by the Russian Army.[7]
  • Flag of Uruguay Uruguay: 3 Tigrs delivered to Uruguayan National Guard (Police) in April 2011 for $600,000.[7] They are equipped with bull bars, air conditioning, grilles for windows and a video surveillance system.[7]

  • Flag of Brazil Brazil: The Military Police of Rio de Janeiro State in September 2010 received a 4x4 armored GAZ-233036 TIGR model for testing until March 2011.[7]
