The Kyiv offensive is an ongoing theatre of operation in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine for control of the capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv, and the surrounding province (oblast) of Kyiv Oblast. On the morning of 24 February, Russian Armed Forces entered the oblast and were engaged by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.[17][18] Ukraine's military command and government are based in Kyiv.[19] By 5 March, as part of the strategy of encirclement, the towns of Bucha, Hostomel, and Vorzel were captured.[20][21] As of 9 March, control of Irpin was still being contested.[22]

On the morning of 24 February, Russian artillery and missiles struck targets in Kyiv Oblast, including Boryspil International Airport, Kyiv's primary airport.[18][23][24]

Later that morning, Russian forces crossed the border into Ukraine from Belarus to the north. In the Battle of Chernobyl they captured Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which is located close to the border.[25]

Later in the day, Russian paratroopers landed at Hostomel Airport, beginning the Battle of Antonov Airport.[26] According to Ukrainian officials, Russian paratroopers were later repelled by Ukrainian troops.[27] Russian forces have also attempted landings in and around the Kyiv Reservoir.[28] In the course of the clashes, the Antonov An-225 Mriya, the largest aircraft in the world, was reportedly destroyed,[29] although its official status is not fully known.[30]

According to British officials, Russian forces attempted to take the city of Chernihiv on 24 February. After Ukrainian forces held them back, Russian forces laid siege to the city, while some Russian mechanized forces bypassed the city altogether.[31][32]

On the night of 24 February, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that "subversive groups" were approaching Kyiv.[33][34] That night, United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that some Russian mechanized infantry units had advanced to within 20 miles (32 km) of Kyiv.[33]

25 February[]

On the morning of 25 February, the Russian Air Force continued its bombardment of the capital city, bombing central Kyiv.[35] A Ukrainian Su-27 fighter jet was later shot down over Kyiv; the plane crashed into a nine-story apartment complex, setting the building ablaze.[36][37]

At 06:47, a Ukrainian army unit blew up a bridge over the Teteriv River near Ivankiv, halting a Russian tank column advancing from Chernobyl.[38][39] The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine later said that Ukrainian airborne assault soldiers engaged the Russians in a skirmish at Ivankiv and Dymer.[40][41]

At mid-morning, Russian saboteurs dressed as Ukrainian soldiers had entered Obolon District,[42][19] an area in the northern portion of Kyiv that is about 6 miles (9.7 km) from the Verkhovna Rada (parliament building).[43] Throughout the day during the Battle of Kyiv, gunfire was heard throughout several wards of the city; Ukrainian officials described the gunfire as arising from clashes with Russian troops.[19][43]

Some Russian soldiers were able to break through the Ukrainian defense at Ivankiv, though that battle continued throughout the day. According to Russia's Ministry of Defense, these Russian forces were able to advance and capture Hostomel Airport after a ground-based assault, creating a key landing zone for Russian forces just 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) from Kyiv.[44]

Zelenskyy urged citizens to fight back with Molotov cocktails.[45][46] The reserve Territorial Defense Forces were activated to defend the capital. 18,000 guns were also distributed to residents of Kyiv who were willing to fight.[47]

In the early morning of 26 February, Russian paratroopers began landing in the city of Vasylkiv, just south of Kyiv, in order to capture the Vasylkiv Air Base. In the ensuing battle, heavy fighting began over control of the city.[48] Ukrainian officials said that at 01:30, a Ukrainian Su-27 fighter jet shot down a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 carrying paratroopers over Vasylkiv.[49][50] Later, two American officials said that a second Russian Il-76 had been shot down over the nearby city of Bila Tserkva.[51] Despite Ukrainian anti-aircraft action, elements of Russian paratroopers were able to land to the south of Kyiv around Vasylkiv and made contact with troops of the home guard forces. At 07:30, Ukrainian officials reported that the defenders, supported by airpower, had successfully repulsed the paratroopers.[52]

Russian forces began formally assaulting Kyiv later in the early morning, bombarding the city with artillery and attempting to capture a power plant and army base within the city. Ukrainian forces were able to defend both objectives.[53][54] The mayor of Vasylkiv, Natalia Balasinovich, said Vasylkiv had been successfully defended by Ukrainian forces and the fighting was ending.[55]

The Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant, located just north of the city in the suburb of Vyshhorod, was captured by Russian forces.[56][57] On 26 February, Ukrainian forces recaptured the power plant.[58] Ukrainian air defenses also allegedly intercepted a missile aimed for the plant. Interfax stated that if the plant's dam were to fail, flooding could destroy "the entire left bank of Kyiv".[59]

27 February[]

In the early morning of 27 February, a Russian missile struck an oil depot in Vasylkiv, setting the facility ablaze.[60][61] A radioactive waste disposal site near Kyiv was also hit by airstrikes, but the storage site itself escaped the impact.[62] Concurrently, there were reports of fighting occurring in Kalynivka.[63]

Later in the early morning, the Ukrainian army stated it had destroyed a Kadyrovtsy convoy of 56 tanks in Hostomel, including commander Magomed Tushayev.[64] However, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, said Tushayev was alive and published a video showing him along with Anzor Bisaev, another Chechen commander.[65]

In the morning of 27 February, a Russian airstrike struck an apartment building in the small city of Bucha, located just south of Hostomel.[66] Fighting was also reported in Bucha, and Ukrainian forces destroyed a bridge in the city to slow the advance of Russian forces.[67][68] The mayor of the neighboring city of Irpin, Oleksandr Markushin, later said that Ukrainian forces defeated the Russian forces attacking the city, after destroying the bridge between it and Bucha and trapping them.[69] Videos later emerged on social media showing destroyed armor and several dead soldiers.[70]

Later on 27 February, a large Russian convoy was seen on satellite images heading towards Ivankiv. The Russian forces that bypassed Chernihiv on 24 February began approaching Kyiv from the northeast.[32] Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, told the Associated Press that Kyiv had been completely encircled, making evacuation of citizens impossible. However, he later retracted his comments, stating he was speaking figuratively.[71] According to The Guardian, roads leading out of Kyiv from the south were free of Russian forces.[32]

28 February[]

A Ukrainian official stated that in the early morning of 28 February, a column of Russian military equipment was destroyed in the village of Makariv, located to the west of Kyiv.[72] A CCTV video posted later showed a car carrying an elder couple being blown up by Russian forces during the fighting at a crossroads in the village, killing them both.[73]

Meanwhile, the Ivankiv Historical and Local History Museum was destroyed during the fighting in Ivankiv, destroying many works by Ukrainian painter Maria Prymachenko.[74] During the night, Russian forces fired a 9K720 Iskander missile on a military communications center in the eastern suburb of Brovary, killing one person and injuring five people according to Igor Sapozhko, the mayor of Brovary.[75][76]

1 March[]

On 1 March, Russian missiles struck the Kyiv TV Tower, cutting off television broadcasts in the city and killing five people.[77] Russian shelling also hit the neighborhoods of Rusanivka and Kurenivka, as well as the suburbs of Boyarka and Vyshneve.[78][79] Heavy fighting was ongoing in Borodianka.[80]

2 March[]

On 2 March, Irpin was reported to have suffered from heavy damage after being struck by a missile.[81] Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, later stated that Ukrainian troops had recaptured Makariv.[82]

Ukrainian forces counterattacked at Hostomel, and stated they had retaken the city after killing 50 members of the 31st Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade.[83][84][85]

Ukrainian officials said that two civilians were killed and four were injured after Russian shelling hit a car in the neighboring village of Vorzel.[86] In the village of Markhalivka, six civilians were killed in a Russian airstrike, according to the local police.[87] Meanwhile, Sky News journalist Stuart Ramsay was wounded by gunfire, after the car carrying him and his team was ambushed near Kyiv. Ukrainian officials stated that the attackers were Russian troops.[88]

An armored Russian column was reported to have reached near Brovary, with the Institute for the Study of War stating that they likely came from Sumy Oblast. The ISW added that Ukrainian forces might not have been able to resist their advance as the area is flat and sparsely populated.[89]

6 March[]

A Ukrainian official, Oleksiy Arestovych, stated that Russian forces had captured Bucha and Hostomel on 5 March, and were not allowing civilians to evacuate, despite alleged injuries to children. In Irpin, Russian shelling hit an evacuation checkpoint.[90] Eight civilians were killed according to Markushin.[91] The Ukrainian Interior Ministry stated that five people were killed when Russian forces shot at a Ukrainian checkpoint in the village of Yasnohorodka.[92] According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the mayor of Bucha, Anatoly Fedoruk, was wounded in the shelling as well.[93][94]

7 March[]

On 7 March, the Hostomel City Council stated that Yuri Prilipko, the mayor of Hostomel, was killed after Russian forces shot him while he was distributing food and medicine to civilians.[95] Later, Markushin was captured.[94] In Makariv, local officials said that at least 13 civilians were killed due to a Russian airstrike hitting a bakery.[96]

8 March[]

Russian forces advanced on the highway between Zhytomyr and Kyiv, threatening the town of Fastiv, in addition to trying to break into Brovary. Heavy clashes took place in Makariv, Bucha, Hostomel, Vorzel and other areas.[97]

9 March[]

The convoy of Russian tanks advancing to Kyiv from the north had meanwhile reached within a few kilometres from the city by 9 March.[98] Vadym Denysenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Internal Minister, stated that Ukrainian forces launched a counterattack near Kyiv during the night and destroyed five Russian tanks.[99]

10 March[]

On 10 March, Ukrainian officials said that the Azov Battalion and the 72nd Mechanized Brigade ambushed the 6th and 239th Tank Regiments of the 90th Guards Tank Division in Brovary Raion, inflicting heavy losses and forcing them to retreat. They also stated they had killed the 6th Tank Regiment's commander, Col. Andrei Zakharov. Footage of tanks being attacked near Brovary later emerged online.[1][2] Two civilians were meanwhile killed in Makariv when their car was hit by a shell according to the Kyiv Police.[100]

11 March[]

By 11 March, some elements of the Russian Kyiv Convoy had broken off and deployed into firing positions. While the bulk of the convoy remained on the road, some parts, including artillery, had left the main column, and started taking up positions near Hostomel.[101] Some parts of the convoy took up positions in Lubyanka, and nearby forests.[102] An assessment of the offensive at this date by the Institute for the Study of War said that Russian ground forces attempting to encircle Kyiv had paused to resupply and refit their combat units, having failed in their attacks from 8 to 10 March.[103]

The Security Service of Ukraine stated that seven civilians were killed after Russian forces shot at an evacuation column in the village of Peremoha, located in the former Baryshivka Raion, and forced it to turn back.[104]

12 March[]

The Kyiv Independent newspaper stated that overnight missile strikes had caused an oil depot in Vasylkiv as well as another in the village of Kryachky to be set ablaze. Shelling on the village of Kvitneve at 03:40 set a frozen goods warehouse on fire.[105][106]

Vasylkiv mayor Natalia Balasynovych later stated that Russian missile strikes had destroyed the Vasylkiv Air Base along with its airstrip. In addition, the ammunition depot in the town was set ablaze as well. The UK's Ministry of Defence stated that Russian forces were 25 kilometres (16 mi) from the center of Kyiv.[107][108]

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov stated that Russian forces had destroyed the military airfield in Vasylkiv and the main center of radio and electronic intelligence of Ukrainian forces located in Brovary using long-range high-precision missiles.[109]

13 March[]

An American journalist, Brent Renaud, was killed and two other journalists were wounded at a checkpoint in Irpin when Russian forces shot at a car carrying non-Ukrainian journalists, according to the head of the Kyiv police department.[110] Ukrainian forces prevented an attempt by Russian forces to advance further on Kyiv by blowing up a pontoon bridge on the Irpin river near Hostomel and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) north of the main bridge on the river.[111]

14 March[]

Fox News reporter Benjamin Hall was wounded in the village of Horenka while reporting on the conflict near Kyiv. Cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski and Oleksandra Kuvshynova, a Ukrainian news producer and fixer, were killed in the same attack. Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs, stated that it was caused by Russian shelling.[112][113] Russian forces meanwhile had captured Bucha and half of Irpin by 14 March.[114]

15 March[]

The National Police of Ukraine stated that one civilian was killed and two others wounded in Hostomel when Russian troops fired at evacuating buses.[115] In Bucha, Russian troops captured volunteers and employees of the city council, although they released them the next day.[116]

16 March[]

The Ukrainian government announced that its forces had begun a counter-offensive to repel Russian forces approaching Kyiv. Fighting took place in Bucha, Hostomel and Irpin.[117]
