Edward Chrysostom David "Pony" Scherrer (28 January 1913 - 22 April 2002) was a United States Army Major General.
Early life
Edward was born on January 28, 1913 on a farm near Shawneetown, Illinois to Susan and George B. Scherrer. He also had five brothers and two sisters. He spent his youth in Shawneetown and graduated from high school at age 16. In 1929 he entered Southern Illinois University where he earned a teacher’s certificate.
Military career
Major military assignments
- 1933-1937: Attended the United States Military Academy, graduated on June 12, 1937 and was commissioned in the Cavalry (ASN: 0-20690).
- 1942-1943: Served in the Fiji Islands and Solomon Islands, served with the Reconnaissance Force, 43rd Infantry Division
- 1944-1945: Served in the European Theater with the 16th Cavalry Group and later commanded the 19th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized)
- 1951-1952: Commanded cavalry units in the European Theater.
- 1952-1953: Ordnance Corps, Army Field Forces
- 1953-1956: Chief of Staff, 40th Infantry Division; Chief of Staff, 1st Cavalry Division
- 1956-1957: Commanding Officer, Combat Command B, 4th Armored Division
- 1957-1958: G-3, III Corps
- 1958-1960: Deputy Chief of Staff for Military Operations, Department of the Army
- 1960-1961: Served in the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Post-military career
He was actively involved as a riding instructor and polo player/referee and was a nationally recognized judge of equestrian events. He enjoyed golf in his retirement at Hilton Head, South Carolina and when he later moved to Bellingham was a member of the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
Personal life
Edward married Joyce Constance Kearsley while serving in the Fiji Islands in 1943. Together they had two children (Ted and David). His wife passed away in 2013.
Death
Edward passed away on April 22, 2002 in Bellingham, Washington at the age of 89. He was buried in the Bayview Cemetery in Bellingham.

DSC synopsis
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Cavalry) Edward Chrysoston David Scherrer, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the Reconnaissance Force, 43d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces from 1 to 13 July 1943, at New Georgia, Solomon Islands. Captain Scherrer's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 43d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
