Clemente López de Osornio (1720-1783) was a South American military captain and rancher of Province of Buenos Aires.

Biography[]

Born November 25, 1720 in Buenos Aires, he was the son of Francisco López Osornio and María Gamiz de las Cuevas Álvarez Lasarte, both born in the city. In 1746, López Osorno married in Buenos Aires to Martina Arroyo Jiménez de Paz and she gave him four children: Catalina, Andres Ramón, María Magdalena, and Angel. After widowhood López Osorno returns to marry in 1766 with María Manuela Rubio Díaz Gamiz having six children: Juana Bautista, María Rafaela, Petrona Josefa, Agustina, José Silverio and María Luisa.[1]

Militar de Frontera[]

In 1736 he enlisted in the provincial militia of cavalry and served in the defense in the fort of Arrecifes against Indians. Three years later, he participated in the campaign of Captain Juan de San Martin to the area that is now Laguna de los Padres, near Mar del Plata. In 1752 he was appointed Commissioner in pago of Magdalena. In 1765 he was appointed commanding general of militia in Province of Buenos Aires, he led an expedition to the Salinas Grandes, west of Bahia Blanca, along the way, he made a survey of the tribes that roamed the area, organized five companies of Blandengues intended to garrison the southern border with the Indians. In 1766 Clemente López Osornio was appointed alcalde de la hermandad in town of Almirante Brown.[2]

In 1779 López Osornio obtained retired, and devoted exclusively to administer your ranches named Rincón de López. He became a wealthy landowner, and in 1782 he was attorney for the landowners appointed for the cabildo porteño for five years.

In December 1783, the ranch Rincon Lopez was attacked by rebel Indians, López Osornio and his son Andres had to seek refuge behind a ditch and palisade, after resisting for three days the Indians approached enough to throw boleadoras with fire toward the ranch, Clemente López Osornio with his son Andres and some pawns decided to go confront, they were defeated and killed by Indians on December 13, 1783 in estancia Rincón de López, province of Buenos Aires.[3]

Clemente López de Osornio was the maternal grandfather of Juan Manuel de Rosas.[4]
