The "Nonfiction" NBA has been a single annual award from 1936 to 1941, 1950 to 1963, and 1984 to date (48 award years). There were no awards for eight years after 1941 and for twenty years 1964 to 1983 there were multiple nonfiction categories —including dual hardcover and paperback "General Nonfiction" 1980 to 1983 (8 awards in four years). Initially this category contains articles about winners of the 56 "Nonfiction" or "General Nonfiction" awards only (2012-02-21).
The "Nonfiction" award recognizes books promoted for adult readers; the National Book Award for Young People's Literature and preceding "Children's" awards have recognized some nonfiction books promoted for young people (children or young adults).
