British athletes

This category is for competitors within the sport of athletics, comprising track and field, road running, cross country running and racewalking. For sportspeople in general, please use Category:British sportspeople.

This is a non-diffusing parent category of Category:Olympic athletes of Great Britain and Category:Paralympic athletes of Great Britain The contents of these subcategories can also be found within this category, or in diffusing subcategories of it.

Athletes should be moved to the relevant event subcategory where possible.

Where British athletes are English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish, they should be categorised in both the constituent country and British athlete categories (e.g. Allan Wells should feature in British sprinters and Scottish sprinters). This is because athletes often represent both countries – i.e. in most cases, an athlete from England will typically compete as a British athlete, but may also represent England in certain competitions.

Where athletes do not have clear English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish origins yet are British citizens (or have competed for Great Britain internationally), they should be listed in the British athlete categories only.
