The Bombing of Kiska, also known as the 2nd Battle of Kiska, aka Operation Cottage took place on August 15, 1943. The United States and Canada assembled a force of 34,426 Americans and 5,300 Canadians, and brought in 95 ships and 168 aircraft, only to find the island abandoned. The Japanese had removed their troops from Kiska under the cover of heavy fog on July 28, after their loss on Attu. Nevertheless, the United States and Canada totaled around 200 casualties, all from friendly fire, booby traps set up by the Japanese, or weather-related diseases. The Allies lost 21 men and had 50 injured as a result of friendly fire or booby traps. Another 130 came down with trench foot. [1]
