The battle of Mindouos was a battle fought between the Persians and Byzantines just after the battle of Thannuris (528). Procopius wrongly claimed that the two battles were one.[1] The Byzantine commander Belisarius was ordered to build a fortress at the location.[1] When Persian forces arrived in the area, his forces were routed in a battle on a nearby hill.[1] As Belisarius was promoted shortly afterwards, it is likely that he was not seen as being responsible himself for his own defeat.[1]
It is possible but unlikely that Belisarius was not the overall commander of the Byzantine army, but a junior partner.[1]
Battle of Thannuris[]
The events of battles of Mindouos and Thannuris have often been compressed into one. In the narrative that portrays them as separate battles the battle of Thannuris is depicted as the Persians luring the Roman Infantry into a trap were they fell into deep holes and were killed or captured causing the cavalry under Belisarius to retreat.[1] The troops were led by many different commanders with an overall commander lacking.[1] Coutzes, one of the army’s commanders, reportedly died after being trapped.[1] the battle of Thannuris took place before the battle of Mindouos.[1]
