The Battle of Chrissiesmeer, also known as the Battle of Lake Christie is a famous battle of the Second Boer War was fought by Lake Chrissie on 6 February 1901.

History[]

The battle started when General Louis Botha attacked the troops of British General Smith-Dorrien. The goal of the assault was to cripple Smith-Dorrians force enough to stop their advance. The assault backfired however and British forces were able to fight off the attack and General Botha ordered a retreat. In the battle approximately 80 members of the Boer unit became casualties as well as about 75 of the British unit. Over 300 horses died in the battle which constituted the bulk of the British horse stock. This signifantly weakened the British soldiers capability and allowed the Boer units to regroup.[1]
