Battle of Karachun — a protracted standoff for control of mountain Karachun between Ukrainian Army and Russian Seperatists during War in Donbas. Mountain holds strategic importance, as its dominant height rises above the city Sloviansk, and it housed TV towers.
Events[]
On April 17, 2014, the DPR forces seized the TV tower, after which they ordered to turn off Ukrainian channels, and in their place to start broadcasting Russian channels[1][2].
On May 2, 2014, control of the mountain was transferred from one side to the other several times. On May 3, 2014, the Ukrainian army established control over the height and the TV tower. In the future, the separatists repeatedly made attempts to storm the mountain and regularly shelled it, including with the use of mortars. On May 9, 2014, there was an attempted attack by DPR militia on the positions of the Ukrainian military on Karachun. The attack was unsuccessful, the key role in repelling the attack was played by the use of combat helicopters. As of May 9, 2014, the positions on the mountain were held by a company of paratroopers of the Airborne Forces of Ukraine.[3].
On May 13, 2014, during a combat clash, seven paratroopers of the 95th Airmobile Brigade of Ukraine were killed, one armored personnel carrier and one GAZ-66 with a mortar mount were burned. The separatists also suffered casualties. On May 19, 2014, a soldier of the 95th Airmobile Brigade Gennady Belyak was killed in a mortar attack.[4]. On May 29, separatists shot down a helicopter Ми-8МТ Национальной гвардии Украины, who, after unloading food and rotating personnel, was returning from the Karachun Mountain area. 12 people were killed - six servicemen of the National Guard of Ukraine, including two people from the helicopter crew, and six representatives of the special unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, among them - Major General Serhiy Kulchytsky[5]. On June 24, 2014, shortly after takeoff near Mount Karachun, the militia shot down a Ukrainian Mi-8 military helicopter with MANPADS, killing nine people.[6]. This helicopter was returning from the checkpoint with specialists who installed equipment in order to organize monitoring of the space, fixing the facts of ceasefire violations in the zone of military conflict.[7]. On the night of July 1, 2014, as a result of shelling of Ukrainian positions on Mount Karachun, the cables that held the TV tower were broken with mines, and this tower collapsed.[8][9]. After that, the fighting for the mountain stopped.
