The Battle of Jabrayil took place on the 27th of september of 2020, after being occupied by the Armenian Armed Forces and the Nagorno Karabakh Armed Forces for 27 years.
Background[]
Jabrayil district was occupied by the Armenian Armed Forces on the 23th of August 1993. In the 2016 Nagorno-Karabakh clashes the Azerbaijani Forces took control over Lalatapa mountain and Jojuq Marjanly.
Fighting[]
The Azerbaijani Forces started to push into the district at 07:30, GMT+4 time. After a short time of 6 hours and 30 minutes, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry officially declared the liberation of Böyük Marjanly village and Nüzgar village. After two weeks of intense fighting, other villages like Mazra and Sarijally got occupied by the Azerbaijani Forces. After another week, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry declares that the Khudafarin Bridge on the border to Iran had also been liberated from Armenian Forces.
Afterwards, on the 25th of October, the Azerbaijani president, Ilham Aliyev, posted on his Twitter account stating that Jabrayil has officially been liberated, informing all of Azerbaijan about it.
Result and aftermath[]

With the second war over Nagorno-Karabakh ending on the 10th of November, in an Azerbaijani victory, also Jabrayil was now one of the districts in Nagorno-Karabakh which are now under Azerbaijani control again since 1994. After the war, Ilham Aliyev announced that the Azerbaijani government would start building and refreshing railways, roads and everything else in Jabrayil and the rest of Nagorno-Karabakh. On the 20th of October, 2022, Ilham Aliyev laid the foundation stone for the Gumlag railway, from Horadiz to Aghband (Zangilan) passing through the Jabrayil district.[1]
