Augustus Perry Blocksom (November 7, 1854 – July 26, 1931) was a United States Army officer and Major general during World War I.[1]
Early life[]
Blocksom was born in Ohio. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1877. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant of cavalry on June 5, 1877.[2]
Military career[]
Blocksom first saw combat on May 7, 1880, in Ash Creek, Arizona where he fought against the Apache. Ten years later he would be brevetted a first lieutenant for his services at Ash Creek. Blocksom also served in the Sioux Campaign of 1890 and 1891. During the Spanish–American War, in 1898, Blacksom was wounded at the attack on San Juan Hill. He then went on to command a squadron of the sixth cavalry during the China Relief Expedition.[2]
He served during the Philippine insurrection from 1900 to 1902. Blocksom was made a major general on August 5, 1917, and commanded Camp Cody until April 18, 1918. He was honorably discharged from the national army and reverted brigadier general on April 18, 1918. Blocksom retired at the end of 1918 and moved to Miami, Florida.[2]
Blocksom was a member of the Military Order of the Dragon, which consisted of individuals who served during the China Relief Expedition.[3]
Awards[]
Blocksom received a Silver Star Citation for his performance at the attack on San Juan Hill in Cuba. He later received another Silver Star Citation while serving in the China Relief Expedition.[2]
Death and legacy[]
Augustus Perry Blocksom died on July 26, 1931, at the age of seventy-six.[2]
