Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll (c. 1575 – 1638), also called "Gillesbuig Grumach", was a Scottish politician and military leader.
Biography[]
He was the son of Colin Campbell, 6th Earl of Argyll, and converted to Roman Catholicism, although in 1594 he had commanded royal troops in the Battle of Glenlivet against Catholic Rebels, especially the Gordons of Huntly. In 1619, he surrendered his estates to his son, Archibald Campbell. He was made a knight of the Golden Fleece in 1624. His kinsman was William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling.
His nickname, "Gillesbuig Grumach" is the Gaelic for Archibald the Grim. This presumably originates from his wife Lady Agnes Douglas, daughter of the Earl of Morton, and after their 14th century ancestor, Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas.
