Androsthenes son of Callistratus, from Thasos, who had been settled in Amphipolis, was admiral of Alexander the Great. He accompanied as a trierarch the Nearchus' fleet ; of this voyage, Androsthenes also wrote his own account. Alexander sent Androsthenes down the Euphrates to explore the Arabian coast, skirting the coast of Arabia in a triacontor and sailing farther than Archias of Pella.
